Breast Cancer Awareness Month October
Breast cancer is a disease in which cancer cells form in the tissues of the breast. One in eight women will develop breast cancer at some point in her life. Breast cancer is by far the most common cancer in women worldwide, both in developed and developing countries. In Bangladesh, one survey cited that breast cancer is responsible for 21% of death of women between 15 – 49 years of age. Many breast cancer symptoms are invisible and not noticeable without a professional screening, but some symptoms can be caught early.
According to the American Cancer Society, when breast cancer is detected early and is in the localized stage, the 5-year survival rate is 99%. Early detection includes doing monthly breast self-exams and scheduling regular clinical breast exams and relevant investigations. When breast cancer is detected early, it can be treated more successfully increasing the chances for survival.

Lack of awareness is one of the important causes of delayed diagnosis. The majority of deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, where most women with breast cancer are diagnosed in late stages due mainly to a lack of awareness on early detection and barriers to health services.
